چکیده

Kidney function has been traditionally identified with glomerular filtration rate (GFR). However, the kidney has multiple functions beyond filtration and a careful evaluation of its whole spectrum of activities should be carried out. Furthermore, the kidney presents a functional reserve capacity both at glomerular and tubular level. In presence of appropriate stimuli, patients with intact nephron mass can increase their GFR and tubular secretion. The difference between maximal capacity and baseline function represents the renal functional reserve (RFR). Glomerular and tubular kidney stress test may help to evaluate RFR and improve the clinicians' ability to better diagnose and prognosticate both acute and chronic kidney disease. © 2016 S. Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis with Grade 4 Vesicoureteral Reflux in a Child with Single Kidney

Introduction Renal tubular acidosis (RTA) is a non-uremic defects of urinary acidification. It is characterized by a normal anion gap hyperchloremic  metabolic acidosis; plasma potassium may be normal, low or high-depending on the type of RTA. These syndromes differ from uremic acidosis which is associated with a high anion gap, decreased glomerular filtration with enhanced proton secretion b...

The Histopathological Evaluation of the Effects of Capparis spinosa Seed Hydroalcoholic Extract on Cisplatin- induced-Nephrotoxicity in Rats

Background and Objective: Increment in cancer prevalence and subsequent need for chemotherapy leads to distinct kidney-related diseases such as acute kidney injury (AKI). Cisplatin is a common chemotherapeutic agent that has been used in many cancers; however, it can damage renal cells. Capparis spinosa is an important therapeutic plant in Persian medicine that encompasses high amounts of bioac...

Renal Stress Testing in the Assessment of Kidney Disease

As part of human evolutionary development, many human organ systems have innate mechanisms to adapt to increased "work demand" or stress. This reserve capacity can be informative and is used commonly in cardiology to assess cardiac function (e.g., treadmill test). Similarly, the kidney possesses reserve capacity, which can be demonstrated in at least 2 of the following renal domains: glomerular...

Histological, ultrastructural and biochemical studies on the kidney of mice treated with Carthamus tinctorius L. extract

Objective: Carthamus tinctorius L.(C. tinctorius) is used as a food additive but also has medicinal applications. The present work was designed to investigate its probable side effects on the histology and function of the kidney in the mice. Materials and Methods: Sixty adult Balb/C mice were randomly distributed into one control and three experimental groups. The control group received only di...

The invitro effect of Methyl tert-butyl ether on liver, gill and kidney tissues of Rutillus caspicus

This study was conducted to evaluate the tissue of liver, gills and kidney Rutillus caspicus exposed to concentrations of 50, 100, 150 mg of Methyl tert-butyl ether, for 7, 14, 21 days. Average water temperature of 19±1 °C, water oxygen of 7.6 ± 0.2 mg/l and zero salinity were measured. A total of 156 fishes were studied in this experiment. In the first, second and third week of the test, three...
